Missing fonts "hidden" in bullet points

Explorer ,
May 24, 2022 May 24, 2022

I am updating a project another designer created and when I update fonts, some are still showing up as missing and I have determined that they are within customized bullets the designer created (see below). How do I update them to my version of the same font?

What is the missing font?

Sometimes a font is missing because a style is applied to a font that is missing that style from its family. This happens if a character style applies a style (such as Italic) but not a font family. If that character style got applied to text in a font that has no corresponding style (e.g., there is a Palatino Italic but not a Helvetica Italic) then that is seen as a missing font. See if a character style is applied to the bullet. If so, edit the style to include both the style and the font family.

One way to prevent this from happening it to always apply both a font family and a style when making a character style.

Change the used Character Style, change in the paragraph style in the section bullets and numbering.

As Will has mentioned, it's a missing style/font connected to the bullet's Character Style. Even if the bullet itself has been assigned correctly (in your case, the green bullet is showing properly), the bullet spec includes the character after (which is usually a tab).

In any case, open the Character Style used on the bullet and edit it to remove the errant style/font.

in my example, the style "GreenBullet" has a semibold style assigned which the font used in the paragraph does NOT have, so it triggers the pink warning.

Hi Craig,

look up Type > Find Fonts… to see the font style that is missing.

You can substitute the style in the Find Fonts… panel globally for your document

Make sure that you checked the option to change styles in your document with Find Fonts… as well.

In that case, it's likely that the glyph assigned as the bullet character does not exist in the substituted font. This happens when special glyphs in, say, Minion are used, and then you either don't have Minion or don't have the extended character set.

Choose another bullet glyph for that style, in the Bullets and Numbering pane:

Hi @Prisiclla27719611un1o ,

what exactly is "it" that is saying there is no missing font?

InDesign's preflight? Or Type > Find Fonts… ?

Check preflight for missing glyphs.
