MS word to indesign mapping

Hi,

I was to received one word document with 200 plus pages to layout. and i was going to map styles to help speed things up. due to timelines they can't deliver all of the manuscript at one time so they want to send it in section.

Can do mapping of styles from word do indesign multiple times? what should be aware of? tips or tricks to share?

If you're repetitively doing Style Mapping when importing Word files, you must set up a Preset by using the Save Preset button. The saved Mapping shows up in the Preset menu:

and what am i saving as a preset? what i want to include? or the styles custom mapping itself?

It's the actual mapping. So the preset ensures that each time you import a Word document, the mapping will be the same and you don't have to manually define it each time. That's assuming the Word content is the same from file to file though.

question. how come when i map i see a bunch of styles in word that are not in use, i did not create and i don't recognize. i made the word document template myself, and i checked the word document, they did follow my styles

Why don't you give us screen shot of the styles in Word and then again in InDesign since I haven't seen that problem.

I know in Word you can hide styles from being displayed in the Styles pane but technically they still exist in the document. I'm guessing that's what you're running into. Word let's you manage those styles and actually delete them if you wish.

sure. this are my paragraph styles, that looks fine:

this is the character styles, here is where things get clunky since in the styles i made them i made only bold and italic.

however, there are several character styles they have that dont show in the "show styles in use" in word:

i selected "non" for character styles in my mapping ( i have not committed to it since i wanted to pick you guys brains). i think those are styles i will need to create and apply as i go along, and that will be done for the other 3 sections i will receive later. right?
