My paragraph styles are not applying

We have recently upgraded our computer and we've just downloaded the newest 2017 version of InDesign CC. I transferred our newsletter from the old computer to the new computer with the new version of CC. I created a new paragraph style and it let me create the style but it won't let me apply the style to the document. Any suggestions?
