When I convert my 2020 adobe cc indesign file to an IDML file, the nested character styles are dropping and displaying "nothing" to the end-user. How can I solve this problem?
This is a bug.
This depends on the variations available for the base font. If the user does not have the font installed and/or the base font does not have a "regular" variation, it will depreciate to "Nothing." At least that is what seems to be happening here. I would try setting the font name and see if that gives more specificity.

I'd agree with Max. There's a pretty good chance that the user either doesn't have the font you're using, or is using a different version of the font.

The main issue here is that Font Weights is a new feature (correct me if I'm wrong) in InDesign 2020.
That menu doesn't exist prior to 2020 - variable fonts are a new feature.
Opening an IDML in InDesign earlier versions without those features would remove them, as they don't exist.
