Nesting an image within another? Crazy idea.

I know.... But I had to try it anyway.

I started with an imported Adobe Illustrator graphic.

Copied it and pasted it inside a graphic frame that already had an image of a Blue Jay in it (beautiful bird, btw).

Result? The Illustrator frame completely replaced the Blue Jay?

It seems InDesign's nesting capabilities are limited, in some way, to embedded vectors?

Oh well, not the end of the world...

One frame, one element. That's how it works.

You can always use a second frame and group them. 🙂

Well, Bob, I can't possibly "group" an image with itself, can I?

I guess that was a dumb question...

There's no way to do this and there's probably no need to do this any way.

Roger, are you coming from an Adobe FrameMaker background by any chance? Frame lets you do that.

What did you want to happen? Did you want the Illustrator graphic and the blue jay to both be inside the image frame? If so, Bob's suggestion will do that.

1. Select the blue jay image (just the image, not the frame) and cut. The frame will remain.
2. Paste (the blue jay will appear within a new frame).
3. Position the new blue jay with the Illy graphic how you want it.
4. Select both.
5. Group.
6. Cut.
7. Select the original (now empty) blue jay image frame.
8. Edit>Paste Into

Any two or more objects will do this, even two copies of the same image, so you can sort of group an image with itself. If that's not what you want to do, can you give more detail?

I get that, when "grouped", any number of objects can be "paste into" another object.

I get that totally. I even got that BEFORE asking my silly question.

My question was really "What if?" type of question? 

Just "how far" can InDesign "nesting" feature be taken? 

Since this is not documented anywhere I have seen, I thought I'd ask the question.

In case, there was something "silly" I missed.
