No warning about missing links when exporting to jpeg or png

Explorer ,
Jul 24, 2023 Jul 24, 2023

If I have a document with a missing link, I get a warning when exporting to PDF that there are missing links. If I am exporting a jpeg or a png of the same document, I don't get any warnings at all about missing links and simply get pixelated graphics in the output. Is this standard behaviour?

It seems so. I just tested it and as you said I did not get any notification. InDesign uses the OPI-image of the missing picture to generate the PNG or JPEG so if you export with 72 ppi it can be fine. Yet I hear you, maybe a notification can be enabled?

Hi @Andrew_Inner_North , There are a few other potential quality problems with JPEG Exports that include images. I use a script to export JPEGs and PNGs via PDF, which often produces higher quality exports. I just posted a link to the scripts here:

https://community.adobe.com/t5/indesign-discussions/lines-appearing-in-png-after-export-from-indesig...

They check the page’s link status before exporting. The scripts’ download link:

Interesting! Thanks for linking to your scripts. I downloaded and tried the png one just using a blank rectangle (as I usually use "selection" when exporting a png) but it said that there were missing links? It might take a while to retrain the ctrl+e muscle memory so let's hope there's a fix to the built-in functionality. I'm surprised this hasn't come up before as a bug? I couldn't find anything on it before posting.

Sorry @Andrew_Inner_North , I added a link modified check when I saw your post and didn’t test it carefully. Try these same link:

Hi @Andrew_Inner_North ,

and another thing:

I already see this behavior with InDesign CS6 version 8.1.0 on my Windows 10 machine.

With PDF and EPS export the missing links in a document will issue a warning message.

Not so with export to PNG and JPEG.

Thanks for testing Uwe. Very strange that this has been a bug for so long and it hasn't been raised before.

Maybe it's a rarity to how often it happens.

I can't remember the last time I had a missing link.

Hi Andrew,

for me its a wake-up call. Sometimes I take things for granted. It never occured to me that this could be an issue. So thank you again for your bug report!
