Optical Margin Alignment customisation

New Here ,
Apr 26, 2018 Apr 26, 2018

Hi there

I'm typesetting paragraphs of body copy in Helvetica set to justify.

I'm trying to find a way to get my punctuation to hang out a little, I know InDesign's answer is the Optical Margin Alignment option in the Story palette, but I find this pushes alphabet characters such as the letter T and A too far to the left. It seems like adjusting the point size in the Story palette only effects how far out punctuation sits, A–Z characters are not adjusted, they only move as one.

Is it possible to hang punctuation with justified text in InDesign without having alphabet characters move at all?

Cheers, Darren

No. The only option is on or off, and it is a story-wide setting, so all text frames in the story are affected. It should be more adjustable and it should be a paragraph level option, but it’s not.
