Question

Options for multiple exports of the same page

I have an InDesign file with a single page (single spread, currently  content on a single layer). I can export the page but I would also like to create separate exports of  segments of the same page including all the content within that segment. I don't want to keep multiple copies in sync with manual edits.

Is there some what to accomplish this with InDesign?

Using the image below as an example. I want to end up with 4 exports

  1. Content in the black rectangle including white, red, green
  2. White rounded rectangle and its content
  3. Red vertical rectangle and its content
  4. Green rectangle and its content

If you work on a PC:

It's not a free solution - but you don't have to be a coder to use it - just to be able to "describe" your manual clicks.

And, of course, you can have specific names for each object - pre-defined in your template.

Put them on separate layers, and when exporting your different types turn off the layer(s)  you don't want to see and export only the layers you want visible.

If you want do all options in 1 pass we need more information as it might be possible to write a script that would export it as many times as necessary by activating/deactivating layers.

If the content of the rectangles is best done in InDesign and all the exported PDFs being the size of the black rectangle is not a problem, you could put the 4 elements on separate layers and then suppress the unwanted layers on output.

Or, if the PDF sizes need to match the rectangles, you could make the red, white and green rectangles as separate smaller InDesign documents and place them in a bigger document for the black rectangle and again manage what's included by using layers.

@Nick Passmore

But it's possible to export just selection - there is no need to complicate things.

As PNG or JPG? I was assuming the OP wanted to export PDFs. Though it's true he or she doesn't say that!

But is there a way to export a selection as PDF?

Also, if the "segments" contain multiple page items they would need to be grouped I think.

Only through custom script.

THIS TASK CAN BE DONE IN ILLUSTRATOR, NOT IN INdesign.

Do you mean I need to convert the design to .AI or that there is a way to incorporate the inDesign file within an AI file and export it from there?

Rather that you shloud do it in Illustrator - instead of InDesign.
