Community Beginner ,
Feb 09, 2025 Feb 09, 2025

I have created a file in InDesign 20.1 and packaged it. I then tried to open the file in the package and it said that I couldnt open it because it had been created in a later version ... InDesign 20.1! Can someone help with this issue?

Thanks for responding. I ended up contacting Adobe help who were very helpful on Chat ... human to human. Yes, the problem was I had two versions installed, 19.5.2 and the latest 20.1.. I am used to the versions just updating, I havent ever had this probelem before. I had to uninstall version 19.5.2 as Indesign 2024 was acting as a default. Having done that and restarting seems to have fixed the issue and the default is now opening with InDesign 2025. thanks.

What is your version of the operating system?

Any chance you have TWO versions of InDesign installed - and older version is set as default?

There was no need to uninstall older version - just switch default application.

Some day you might need to use older version - Adobe let you install only one previous major version.

We tried avoiding uninstalling the older version, but it kept defaulting to InDesign 2024 and wouldn't allow the document to be saved to version 2025, even though it was created in 20.1.

He thought there might be a glitch with Microsoft ... but to me this is an issue in Adobe.

I was assured that my files created in the versions in 19, would convert to 20.1. I will see, and let them know if they don't.

All seems OK for now.

thanks

On Windows, order of installing software - or updates - determine / can change default application.

For example, if you install 19, then 20, then do update to 19.5 - 19.5 will be the default one - as the update to 19.5 was installed last.

You could've just unistalled 2025 and installed it again and everything would be OK.

If you now want to have 19 - you need to unistall 20, install 19.x then install 20 again.

But, in any case, you should turn OFF Auto Updates for InDesign.
