Well, there you have it. InDesign does not (really) care where the pages end up and what numbers you put on them. If the first 5 pages are numbered roman -- which must be by design, because InDesign does not do so by itself --, and the following pages are numbered arabic, then you get:
i -- front page
ii-iii -- left, right
iv-v -- left, right
1-2 -- left, right
3-4 -- left, right
As you noticed, "odd page numbers go on the right hand side, even page numbers go on the left hand side", but you forgot that ALSO "odd pages go on the right hand side" and "even pages go on the left side".
Insert a blank page after 'v' to restore the usual page numbering.
