page numbering opentype issue

Community Beginner ,
Jan 14, 2024 Jan 14, 2024

Hello, I'm working on a book project and I'm having a problem I never had.

Only the third digit of current page number isn't affected by opentype features.

All numbers should be proportional oldstyle but the third digit actually isn't.

Anyone could help?

Try using the same font and setting on a different document. Does it also happen there?

Thanks. Font is designed by me. inDesign is the very last version. I think font is not the problem. If I digit the same number in a new text box in the same doc and assigne the opentype features there is no issue (see attach). If I made a new book file on my desktop everything works fine (see attach). Could be possible the issue is because I'm working directly on creative cloud server?

What do you mean by "I'm working directly on creative cloud server"? Does that mean you're storing your files in the folder which appear on your drive as "Creative Cloud Files" (see image)?

If you only find the problem in this file, corruption is a good possibility. Sometimes corruption can be reminded by saving it as an IDML file. Choose File > Save As > InDedesign CS4 or Later [IDML]. Then open the IDML file in InDesign to see if the corruption is cleared.

Byt the way, you should be warned that the Synced Files (using the Creative Cloud folder) method is disappearing in a month or so. You'll need to store on a different cloud service - DropBox, OneDrive, or others. Read this:

Type above: I meant to say "Sometimes corruption can be removed by saving it as an IDML file.

Are you using a Paragraph Style to control the text and provide the OpenType feature?

Thanks for answering. I use charachter style to style the page number, not paragraph

You should always use Paragraph Styles. Character Styles are only for local differences to the underlaying paragraph style.

The page number paragraph style must be defined and used. Often it is the alignment relative to the spine is useful, so you can use the same style on the left and right pages, used on master/parent pages on the most top  layer.

Another question: did you check, if the font is installed on several places in different versions. It could happen that InDesign pick different fonts from different generations so that the OTF functionality is not picked up for every digit?

ok, I made a paragraph style instead. But, the only way to get the problem solved was save as IMDL and open it with a previous version of inDesign. Then reimporting it in the book file made with the latest version.

I suggest you try it with a Paragraph style only; and make sure you have no character style involved. Testing this way, does the behavior change?

I have had the same issue, and altogether weird:

  • It only happens on the Parent Page templates
  • It only happens on the folios for the recto pages
  • it only happens on the last figure of a three figure number - this reverts to a lining style figure from the non-lining style intended
  • I have tried setting up both Paragraph and Character styles to use Open Type 'Proportional Oldstyle' feature
  • The font I have been using is Sabon LT Std - and -
  • LO & BEHOLD!
  • On Adobe Community I have found that the LT Std font has been superseded by a Sabon Pro - and I suspect that's the issue, as when I changed the font on the folios the problem disappeared
  • So it's most likely an issue with old fonts...

That's Goodbye from Me, Folks!
