pages and spread problems

New Here ,

I'm working on a book with 2 page spreads.  Suddenly, when I delete or move a page the spreads end up with either only 1 page or the spread will have 3 pages.  Very frustrating.  I've moved pages at will in doing about 60 pages with no problem and suddenly it is doing this.

This behavior is controlled by the 'Allow Pages to Shuffle' and 'Allow Spreads to Shuffle' toggles in the drop-down menu (hamburger icon) of the Pages pane. You must have ticked the wrong one. Experiment to see how they affect moving items in the pane.

Thanks for the reply.  I've tried every combination of "Allow Pages to Shuffle" and "Allow Spreads to Shuffle" and it makes no difference. The pages don't shuffle.  If I delete one I get a 1 page spread.  If I add or move one I get a 3 page spread.

One additional thing.  I think this started when I saved the file under a new name.

WHen I go back to the old file, the pages and spreads work properly.  The new file has exactly the same settings regarding pages but its not working.

Maybe something got corrupted - try IDMLing - export as IDML, open this IDML file and save with new name - do not overwrite your original INDD file.

If it won't help - try resetting preferences:

Hmm. If you're sure the behavior is different, the new file might be corrupt. It happens all too often.

Save the file to IDML, then open that and save to a new INDD file name. That might cure the glitch, but look the doc over for other small changes that might need fixing.

If 'Spreads' is unchecked, you should be able to move pages around, but not form more than two page spreads. It's a little non intuitive.

I moved a page over about 10 pages and it kept the spreads intact.  Could this have started the problem?  If so, how do I fix it?

Moving pages should not break anything... you should be able to just drag pages back into order unless the file is corrupt.

Ok.  I did the IDML thing.  No change.  Then I reset preferences.  No change.  I then went back and deleted a few pages in the problem area.  Now it appears to be working, but many of the text boxes have shifted and I'm having to go back and realign them.  I am able to move pages now but I'm afraid to do anything.  This all appears to be happening after page 50.  Could it be a problem dealing with 50 pages?

It's really hard to say anything much more specific without actually seeing the file. But ID can easily handle very large docs, many hundreds of pages. It may be some other aspect of how you've constructed your doc that's made it a bit fragile, but 50 pages is no problem in itself.

50 pages is a small file - but then it depends on the size of the pages and number and size of the objects...

Kind of a workaround - don't move pages but add blank page and then move contents - select all on the source page, Ctrl+X, go to the destination page and Ctrl+Alt+Shift+V - Paste In Place - but if it's not the same side - then go to X field of the location and add or subtract Page's width to move selected objects to the correct side of the spread.
