Palatino nova pro Titling font in page numbers. Bug?

Community Beginner ,

InDesign cc (2018): Page numbers in the Palatino nova pro Titling font (with wide zeros) display with very small, no or even negative spaces between individual figures (e. g. in page number 100). Same problem in Optima nova Titling. Can this malfunction be circumvented?

One should note that titling fonts are so named because they are specifically designed for TITLING. This fact might explain with Palatino Nova Pro Titling doesn't look good when used for page folios.

Possibly these fonts have only tabular numerals. Check in glyphs to see if they also have tabular versions available.

My page numbers are numerals exclusively, and negative spacing should not occur neither at proportional nor at tabular fonts.

Are you sure the tracking on the master’s page number is set to 0 when it is selected?

Thank you for your response.

The tracking is 0, but negative spacing occurs nevertheless, although in page numbers only. The font behaves as expected in normal text.

I tried to set the tracking to a high value (1000 units). It appears to me that this works in normal text as well as in page numbers, but with one exception: in page numbers, the (exceptionally wide) zero's are not affected by tracking. As an example 99 comes out with a wide spacing, while 100 has overlapping figures despite the high tracking value.

It might be a font corruption, probably worth deleting and reinstalling the font.

Thank you for your responses.

The problem is solved now: I just made to small width for the (3-digit or greater) numbers. They were therefore compressed in width. In ordinary text one would expect them to disappear if the width is to small, but not at page numbers, where they just are compressed.

You could set the page number's frame to auto size

I don’t know if it is appropriate to answer in this way, but thank you very much for this great information.

In my answer above, the second Tabular, I should have written Proportional. I’ve just looked at the font and they seem to be Tabular numerals.
