paragraph style changes when copy/pasting in SAME indesign document

Hello, anyone had this before? Using ID 14.0.3 - mac. Reworking 20p catalogue file. When "option" dragging text box to copy 'para styled' text (called headline) works fine/as expected. BUT NOW when I "copy" text box containing para styles & paste into SAME document (on another page, same page, or new doc) my text is styled in new para style, listed at bottom of styles called "body copy Copy" (none of my styles - in original doc - are called "body copy", but the formating is same as basic paragraph style.

The 'headline' para style is not 'based' on "basic paragraph" it seems clean, the text box has an object style but it has the correct para style 'headline' defined. As a test I set up 2 new para styles from scratch in same text box. One copied fine, the other defaulted to this new body copy Copy style.  If anyone has a solution I would love to hear it before I delete/reset prefs & start working on the 200page catalogue with 'many' exisiting styles.

thank you for your time in reading/responding.

Hi Boss_Witch: Are you using Alternate Layouts in the file, or the Content Collector?

Also, you don't have to delete your preferences/cache to see if rebuilding them will help. You can rename them in place or move the files out their folders, start InDesign and check to see if that takes care of the problem. If it doesn't, you can just overwrite the newly-generated files with the originals. More info on where the files live in this post: https://www.rockymountaintraining.com/adobe-indesign-rebuilding-preferences-cache/.

Hi Boss_Witch,

that's rather unusual. Hm. Could you provide a minimum sample document where you are seeing the issue?

Maybe someone here could look into it and provide a solution. Best save the document on Dropbox or a similar service and post the download link. Thanks.

Thank you Barb, the prefs solved the problem. I did have saved data files etc for indesign, I just could remember/find where to put them so your link was perfect. Will write notes for next time. Thanks again

Is there an Object Style applied to your text frames?

Hi, yes there is and it has the correct paragraph style that I want it to use, but it keeps changing on copy/paste, not option drag.

I'm going to move this to the Indesign forum where you are more likely to get a helpful answer.
