I am taking an Intro to InDesign class and struggling with the Parent Page/Child Page. Why would the items on a parent page not show on the child page, even though I applied the parent page to it? What am I missing? Thank you in advance.

Parent objects on Child Pages can be overwritten/removed - that is - if you make Square and a Circle on  your Parent Page - and then go to Page 1 (child page) where it's applied - you can override and delete the Square - now changes to the Parent Page might not fully take hold on that page as you have Overriden the page items - so it's lost it's connection to the Parent Page.

You need to reset the Parent Page and Child Page relationship - and you can do this by Applying Parent Page to the Child Page.
