PDF exports are turning images pink

Community Beginner ,
Mar 15, 2025 Mar 15, 2025

Hey everyone, I'm really struggling here. Working on a document in indesign, in which i've imported jpegs (created in photoshop). Everything was going well, then I modified and saved a new Jpeg. Updated the link in InDesign, and now the pdf exports are pink. (primarily in the white areas of the black and white images).

I know that this often has to do with color profiles, but I cant seem to find the problem.

Using InDesign 2025

Photoshop file is in CMYK mode.

InDesign document is in Print mode.

Transparency Blend space set to CMYK (though also tried RGB)

I've tried exporting to pdf using all the preset options.

I've tried modifying output settings to "no color conversion" as well as "convert to destination"

Any suggestions?

(PDF attached. The original images have a pure grayscale background, no warmth or pink)8.jpg

Tiff is pink. File is too large for a .psd and I need to export various layer configurations anyway.

What do you mean by "layer configurations"?

I'm saving out multiple images from the file, not just one.

Can't you set the Photoshop layer options in InDesign? If the layer selection is complicated, consider using Layer Comps.

Can you upload your export settings?

The psb file is massive and the file would be reused repeatedly throughout the document with various layer options. If the file was smaller, this would be fine. But its too large for this to be feasible.

@STEVEN28465331qzsj

What kind of layers do you have there?

Can you maybe post a small sample?

You can set visibility of each layer separately in InDesign.

Or crop different areas.

OK, there's a .psb format for very large photoshop files, and if you need to save various layer combos native format is ideal as you can save them all in a single file as layer comps.

I'm already in .psb format, whivh can't be placed into InDesign.

It should be placeable. There's an old thread at https://community.adobe.com/t5/indesign-discussions/import-psb-to-id-on-mac-using-command-d/td-p/132... which suggests dragging from finder or Bridge if you're on Mac.

Just tried on my Win 10 system with CS6 which was open, and File > Place didn't see a .psb, but I was able to drag and drop from Explorer.

The psb file still gives a pink outcome.

And it does it with a new .indd file as well, right?

Have your tried re-writing the .psb by doing a Save AS in Photoshop?

Can you share a minimalistic version - cropped to a few cm but with all elements - even low res?

That brings up a point about file size--your JPEG was enormous. Any reason for that?

What happens if you res it down in Photoshop to 8.5 inches tall at 300 ppi? (Do a save as.)

@Dave Creamer of IDEAS

You think it's a moiré effect of resampling JPEG during PDF export?

I was thinking more of an issue with downsampling (and possibly system resources). But I've been stumped for days now!

I'm thinking there's been a profile reassignment or conversion, but I don't know how you'd check that.

On another note, @STEVEN28465331qzsj you implied this is in CMYK mode. Is there a reason you aren't working in RGB and converting to CMYK on export (or letting the printer do the conversion to the correct profile). That's now considered best practice and it would shring the file size by 25%.

I've just always defaulted to CMYK. But as I originally mentioned, I've been exporting this way for years with no issue. The pink came on suddenly with this one specific file. Its possible one of the profiles was accidentally changed, but I've tried all of the defaults.

I resized the jpeg to be quite small. Placed into InDesign, exported, and once again pink.

I'm working on a large University master plan. We need to be able to print out large presentatino boards, and also add into a document and crop into different areas.

When looking at my original  posts, Dave and Robert both claimed to not see the pink I was referencing. When you look at the side by side that I shared, do they look the same? Can you see the difference?

Quick question - as right now I can't check your file - what is the INTENT of your file - print or Mobile / Web?

Are you asking if we are color-impaired? 😜

Yes, I could see the difference on your screen capture.

Haha no. But noone had commented, so was just curious.

The intent is pretty 50/50 print and digital.

But have you checked the thread I've mentioned?

If  [Black] is CMYK - but INTENT is RGB - all colors are "shifted".
