Pink Screen in InDesign

This is getting to be annoying. Whenever I'm working in InDesign, if I pause my work for a period of time, the screen either goes to gray and then to pink. I can't see a thing. I'm continually having to quit out of InDesign and reopen if I want to continue working on a document. Any ideas why this is happening?

Also using a 2023 Apple 27 and a cheap Dell, doesn't appear to do on the dell. But I don't work on that monitor as color is not trust worthy.

Somewhere along the way an update fixed this, not sure if it was
Apple or adobe

I'm an Apple Consultant and have a lot of design clients - we first encountered this issue on June 26 2025 with an end-user's M3 Max MBP running Sonoma 14.7.6 with InDesign CC 2024 (v19.5.4), and with 2 2023 Apple Thunderbolt Studio Displays with the 2 external displays mirrored to each other (but as extended displays to the MBP's built-in display)  Toggling GPU performance acceleration off/on didn't make any difference, and all updates available at the time for CC 2024 had already been applied.  Restarting the system made no difference.  Creating a new macOS user account so that we had a completely fresh environment to test with resulted in precisely the same problem.  The pink/magenta screen came up on only one specific Apple Studio display out of the 2, and only when an open or save dialog box was triggered inside InDesign.  Not finding anything about it with a little research at the time we assumed it was a GPU problem with the logic board of the above mentioned MBP (software update was checked at the time and no firmware updates were available for either of the 2 displays in question), albeit a highly specific and unusual one.  Today we ran into the exact same issue with an M1 Max MBP connected to the same displays, with the same mirroring of the 2 external displays but the MBP built-in display as a separate display.  We checked Apple SW Update again, and this time the firmware update for at least one of the displays came up as available so we ran it and restarted for it to apply, but the exact same behavior persisted within InDesign when triggering an open or save dialog - so not a display firmware problem.  While researching this today again I also came across this  Reddit post wherein it was suggested that upgrading to Sequoia might fix the issue.  I've just upgraded to Sequoia 15.6 on the M1 Max MBP and I'm happy to report that this seems to have resolved the issue!  While our case specifically involved Apple Studio displays connected via Thunderbolt, other comments in the Reddit post mentioned lots of different display types, including HDMI & USB-C, and also specified that mirroring seemed to be the common denominator like in our case.  Hope this info helps others!  I will post back here again after upgrading the other M3 Max MBP to Sequoia.

Update to my last post - the Sequoia upgrade indeed fix the pink/magenta issue on another machine.  So this does seem, at least in our environment, to be a problem with the combination of Sonoma, display mirroring, and InDesign.

Hi I have had this issue for the last year with InDesign and getting the grey then to pink screen. I have to close the file then re-open, its a pain in the arse to be honest. No other adobe app does this.

I am running on a practically new macbook pro maxed up to the hilt with ram and space so no idea what is going on??

I am on the adobe cloud so software is updated whenever there is an update?

Did you try to toggle GPU Performance in Preferences?

Updated new to Mac Studio adding additional ram to work more efficienlty with Adobe software, than what I had on my older 2017 27" iMac. Only since updating does this exact same thing happen to me with InDesign only. I see an update to Sequoia 15.4, which I will update now and see if any improvement.

Have you tried turning GPU Performance off in InDesign preferences?

I have the same problem but it happens not only with InDesign but also with Photoshop. I can't save, save ad, export to PDF etc - the Apple Studio Display goes solid bright magenta. I am running the most current version of Sonoma. Updated this week. That's when the problem began. The Studio Display's firmware is up to date also. I am using a Macbook Pro

I have the same problem. Have to turn off the GPU to get the image back. Upgrading from an old Cinema display 27 to a new Studio Display 27 did not help.

This happens to three of us in our design Studio. It only happens in InDesign. Two of us are using the latest version of InDesign 2025 and one still using 2024. All of us have a Mac Studio, the latest macOS Sonoma and 27 inch Apple Studio Displays.

I have exactly the same thing happening. I've updated system software and Adobe software to try and see if they're fixed it but no joy.

What are your exact versions of InDesign and the operating system? Also, does it involve an external monitor and did you try the troubleshooting steps mentioned above?

I'm having the same problem.. InDesign pink screen, continually quitting out to fix. Did you manage to resolve the issue?

Does it involve an external monitor? Just to have an idea about your setup.

Also, just in case: I assume you went through the standard troubleshooting steps:

https://www.rockymountaintraining.com/adobe-indesign-rebuilding-preferences-cache/

I also assume you tried to toggle GPU Performance?

Hi,

Sorry to hear about the trouble. In addition to the details shared by Leo can you also confirm if you're experiencing the issue on any other Adobe application or just InDesign?

Thanks

Rishabh

ONLY InDesign is affected?

I have the same problem, only INDESIGN; I have a 2023 MacPro, totally maxed with RAM and a full Terabyte of hard disk.

Updating OS did not help. If I stop working and step away from my desk, when I come back it's all gray and then if I'm away longer the screen is entirely pink. It's very irritating. I continually have to quit of and reopen.

How much RAM and spare hard disk capacity do you have?
Have you tried resetting the InDesign preferences back to the factory defaults?
