I have a 550 page book written in Word 2003 that is fully formatted. It is all ready to submit to Create Space for printing but lacks page numbers. I have Indesign6 which I rarely use. I would like to import this book and do nothing really except assign page number
I embedded the fonts in Word and then made a PDF (created on Soda PDF desktop)
My problem is that when imported I get these little red question marks on all the pages. They appear to mean that I do not have needed links.
There are no pictures or illustrations in this file - it is all words.
Why do I need links or fonts when I have submitted a PDF ?
This may be a stupid question but it has me stumped, and I find no ready answer in the forums
Thanks in advance,
bill

What is wrong with using a Word header or footer for page numbers?

I think we need to see a screenshot of that. The red question marks that you mention for missing links do not appear on the pages, they appear in the Links panel. I do not know of any function that makes red question marks appear on pages (... other than the obvious manual way).

I would import the word file into InDesign and create the page numbers on the Masterpage.
