Please add "Screen" Intent Category for New Document

Community Beginner ,
Oct 30, 2023 Oct 30, 2023

I'd like to request a new Intent option called "Screen" as a choice when creating a new INDD file.  The current choices are: Print, Web, and Mobile, but I create a lot of backgrounds for PPT slide shows as well as stills and lower thirds for our video team. The page sizes that would be helpful are 1366 x 768, 720p, 1080p, and possibly 3840 x 2160 for 4K.

Thanks for the reminder Steve - I did just that.

Hi @JBA_personal , All the Intent does is set the initial colors & Swatch modes, and Transparency Blend Space to RGB, with the Ruler Units set to Pixels, so Web and Mobile are effectively the same.

If you want a document set to a specific pixel dimension, with the starting swatches as RGB, it would just be a matter of creating a Document Preset.

Hi Rob, thank you for your explaination and illustration. I do understand all that and had presets made. Don't be fooled by my "community beginner" status - I've been a user from the start. Would just like a time saver and developers to acknowledge there is more intended usage than just Print, Web, and Mobile. Also, I lost those presets during a crash and don't want to recreate them (all about saving time). Thanks.

So you are really looking for a longer list of Page Size pixel dimensions—a Screen Intent wouldn’t add anything else right?

Well, it's more than just a list of sizes (and that's why I'm requesting this feature), it's a starting point with the final intent to be presented on a screen. Not for paper, not for websites, not for smartphones, but for presentations on a computer, projected onto a screen at an event through video or a third party application. It might be semantics to you, but it's a viable starting point and part of my preliminary assessment of a project: what is this for?

Well, it's more than just a list of sizes

The Web and Mobile Intents start the document out with all RGB Swatches, and an RGB Transparency Blend Space. What other changes would a Screen Intent need to make?

I have to agree with the bleachers crowd here. Using ID to design for "screens" is a niche use, I think, and is fully supported by its features, and is enabled to a good starting point by the 'web' and 'mobile' presets. Taking a full minute to create a preset for a specific screen size, and save it, is... minimal time well spent if you do such work and in that size.

Understand, I'm not knocking anything here except cluttering ID with yet another not-quite-feature that is both a trivial task and not used by many.

except cluttering ID

I could see getting rid of Web and Mobile (which was Digital Publishing in earlier versions) and just having it be Screens. Any content that goes to the Web or Mobile today has to be responsive to the device, which wasn’t the case 15 years ago, so designing to a static mobile preset dimension is pretty much usless.

For example this Document can be saved (and loaded) as a preset:

Screen Shot 37.png

From File>Document Presets... you can export or load .dcst preset files. This is the above preset:
