Question

Preventing hypenation in brand name

Hi,

Is there a way to stop hyphenation to a brand name in all the languages and files I do?
So that it’s never hyphenated no matter what paragraph style I use or what language I’m working with?

Thanks!

BR,

Susanne

Another approach would be to create a GREP style that finds the brand name and assigns No Language to it.

Hi @susanneros:

So that it’s never hyphenated no matter what paragraph style I use or what language I’m working with?

Just note that you will need to repeat this for each language in use.

I can help here:

  • With InDesign open and no documents, select the Edit>Spelling>User Dictionary menu command.
  • This opens the User Dictionary dialog box, as shown at right.
  • Change the Dictionary List: options box to Added Words.
  • Type in your company name in the Word: edit box. Do Not Click the Hyphenate button. You want no hyphenation. Click the Add button to put your unhyphenated company name into your user dictionary.

Then you want to set that exception to your hyphenation rules. Select the Edit>Preferences>Dictionary menu command. To set your corporate exception, go about halfway down the dialog box and change the Compose Using: options box in the Hyphenation Exceptions section to User Dictionary, as shown below. This lets you maintain hypenation for other words, but maintain your corporate exception you set in your dictionary.

This should get you the exception you're looking for. If you're interested in learning more about hyphenation options within InDesign, you can review the information about halfway down the webpage cited in this link.

Hope this helps,

Randy
