Printer selection failed error

From time to time I have an issue when I try to print  where the default printer shows up as PostScript File, and if I try to change it, I get an error saying: 'Printer selection failed. Reverting to previous selection.' Any file I try gives me the error. Normally restarting my computer fixes it, but I'm working from home and using a remote desktop connection, so I can't technically restart.

including re-creating the preferences file, but nothing has worked. 

edit: forgot to mention I'm using CS6!
