Printing 4-pg InDesign newsletter at quick printer (Staples)

I have a simple, 4-page newsletter for a non-profit. It is four 8.5" x 11 pages, laid out on two sides* of an 17 x 11 sheet, both sides, folded. Basic, right? But when I take the file to Staples (where they are printing on some gigantic copier, basically), not only does it impose pages wrongly, but it prints the inside UPSIDE DOWN, relative to the outside.  I can think of work-arounds, but why should I have to? What can I say to the printer to get the proper results?

Thanks in advance!  Michael D.

* The ID doc setup is four 8.5" x 11" pages, facing. So you see P1 alone on top, scroll down to see the center layout, and scroll down further for P4.

Another thing that I've found people forget is that there is a checkbox in the print window to "Shrink Oversize Pages" or "Fit to Page" or something similar that may reduce your PDF to 97% or something, which can screw up things like where things are positioned in relation to the fold. If they are using a digital printer (essentially a fancy copy machine), have them print one copy and look at it before they let the rest of them rip.

Thanks, Mig. I always run a couple of tests before running the quantity. In

this case (short of time, naturally), I have prepared two 11x17s, with the

outside (pages 4 and 1) and the inside spread as separate documents. So,

push come to shove, they can run one side, flip, and then the other from

the second doc. This isn't a massive quantity. But it's still irritating

because I know the proper info is in the file; I've printed longer, more

complex two-sided jobs before (albeit with more dedicated commercial

    printers). Cheers!

Look them straight in the eye and say "you're f#%cking kidding right?"

Walk in the back to their work station and change the duplex from top-top to top-bottom.

LOL, thanks. That was my instinct, but I thought I must have something wrong.  Cheers!

It’s often helpful to mock up a dummy for your printers, by printing out the pages on your desk top printer, sticking them together in the correct order and (direction!), numbering the pages with a large felt pen (indicating the cover page) and supplying that with your order to your commercial printer.

Also, on your purchase order/letter, particularly if it’s hand written, write out the printing quantity in words as well as figures e.g. 10,000 (Ten thousand copies). And detail how you want the parcels packed and delivered e.g. Packed in boxes not weighing more than 10 kilos, clearly labelled, with the quantity in each box e.g,  “2000 Widget Brochures, Ref: AB1234“ Please deliver, with a delivery note to: Jo Smith, Widget Corp, High Street etc).
