Problem with the letter "t" in InDesign

New Here ,
Oct 02, 2019 Oct 02, 2019

Hello,

the T and F always seem to be misrepresented. This error also occurs in other fonts (see Figure 3).

I would now have to mark the letter every time I write and hover over it with the mouse to remove the error with a click.

This has only occurred a few days ago and hasn't gone away since. Especially in this document I notice the amount of text in it.

Hi

If you don't want this, then turn off Discretionary Ligatures from the Control panel and make it part of your Paragraph style.

In InDesign, if you make a change with nothing selected, it changes the defaults for the document. You'll need to turn off Discretionary ligatures at the default level as well as for each instance.

It can also be turned on/off per frame by clicking the Open Type widget at the bottom of the frame.

Your screen captures show ligatures of "st" and "sp". Other common ligatures are "ff" "fi" and "Th".

By default, InDesign automatically substitutes ligatures for common letter combinations. You can have them highlighted by following the directions in this post: https://community.adobe.com/t5/InDesign/Why-in-InDesign-are-some-letters-boxed-in-yellow/m-p/10645223#M155132

You can stop InDesign from substituting ligatures as detailed in Adobe's online help: https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/using/formatting-characters.html#apply_ligatures_to_letter_pairs

And you can uncheck the ligatures option in the character formats section of your Paragraph formatting styles.

Time-honored ligature pairs. Consider allowing it as desirable in body copy; whereas many switch it off in larger text, such as headlines. Be sure to give this job to your Paragraph Styles so you don't do it manually.

st and sp ligs don't have quiet the same pedigree as the f-ligs, I think. It's rare to see them used in a book's body text except in old books or for special effect. Personally I would avoid using them except for that reason.
