Problem with visibility buttons in interactive pdf

Community Beginner ,
Feb 20, 2025 Feb 20, 2025

Hi,

I have created an InDesign document with three columns. In column 1 are 4 regions, North, South, West and East. In column 2 are the corresponding suppliers of each region and in column 3 are the contact details of each supplier with hyperlinks.
In column 1 and 2, all regions and text boxes are converted into buttons. These buttons have the property of making the other buttons visible or invisible.
When opening the pdf, only column 1 is visible. For example, if you click on region North then the corresponding suppliers will be visible in column 2 and if you click on one of the suppliers then its contact information will be visible in column 3.
If you then click on another region then the data in columns 2 and 3 should become invisible. That is where it goes wrong, in column 3 the contact data remains visible while it is set to invisible.
I have already saved the document as .idml and reopened it but that does not help.
Attached are some screenshots for clarification, the InDesign document and the interactive pdf.
The document has also been published online, it can be viewed at https://indd.adobe.com/view/63270167-354b-425b-8f62-08c7a97c1f0d
Online everything works fine.

I'm on my phone so can't check your PDF - but how you are checking your PDF? In Acrobat or anything else?

There were two threads about this recently:

https://community.adobe.com/t5/indesign-discussions/indesign-table-trouble/m-p/15144468#M610285

Link to the other one is in my other reply to this thread.

I'll check your files later today - when I get to my laptop.

Unfortunatly, the links don't solve my problem. I hope you can find the problem later today.

I think I've already found?

This is a list of all Behaviors - for this one selected object:

If I'll double-click - in my ID-Tasker tool - on the one marked in red - this object will be selected in InDesign and here is a list of its behaviors - object marked in red on screen below:

If I'll then double click on the element on the lilst - marked in Green on the screen above - marked in Red on the next screenshot:

There is only ONE Behavior - goto URL.

I'll post in a moment list of where each element in the 3rd column is shown / hidden.

Hi Robert,

Thanks for helping me. I appreciate.

All items in column 3 should be hidden when I click on one of the regions in column 1.

So I then only need to apply the “hidden” behavior to the region buttons. The hyperlinks in column 3 should not hide themselves after clicking on them.

Yes, of course, I wasn't suggesting that they should or will.

I think I've found what's the problem - but not sure why it works online?

Interactive Element / button from the 3rd column - marked in red - "MaW-link1":

RobertatIDTasker_3-1740063348402.pngexpand image

is SHOWN in the Buttons marked in Green - column PARENT.

But no other Interactive Element / Button - HIDE it:

There are no PARENTs - Buttons / Interactive Elements - that has a Behavior related to this "MaW-link1" Button - to HIDE it.

The region buttons in column 1 have the behavior 'hidden' on all of the buttons in column 3.

Here's my $0.02. Buttons in PDF are wonky under any condition. The more you add the more wonky the whole thing becomes and that's best case using Acrobat/Reader. Many third party PDF readers won't even recognize the buttons.

You're free to continue with this of course, but personally, I'd never take on such a job.

You are right - I was looking in the wrong place.

Looks like @BobLevine is right - it's completely unreliable in the PDF...

Attached is a PDF where "1-Noord" is set to HIDE everything.

Then, when I click on any other region - and then again on "1-Noord" - everything in the 2nd column is hidden - except objects from the 3rd column...

The export to pdf gives these problems. The online published version is OK.
But my client prefers a pdf....

@DesignStudio21

Maybe problem is with number of objects...

Or, maybe your file is corrupted?

I'm not near my laptop now - can you try IDMLing?

Export as IDML, open, save with a new name - do not overwrite your original file.

Yes, it's for off-line use. I have already saved the document as .idml and reopened it but that doesn't help.

I don't know if the amount of objects has a limit, I didn't read any of that.
