Problems making a PDF from Indesign CS5

New Here ,
Jun 01, 2010 Jun 01, 2010

Hi friends. I have recently switched to CS5 and I find that I usually need to close the program and then reopen it before I can make a PDF. It says it is working in the background but all it does is spin without creating the PDF. Anyone else having this problem?

I don't feel Adobe owe me anything. Just as I don't blame Microsoft or Apple when my hard drive crashes. I don't blame the makers of the hard drive and I don't blame the people who made the computer. I just fix the problem and get on with my work.

There are genuine cases where it's a bug, and if it's constantly corrupting files it could be a bug. But I rarely have files that need that much work to get working again.

And again, I've never had an issue with the creation of a PDF from InDesign in so much that it prohibited me moving forward with my work.

I've actually had more issues with Corel (Ventura) and with Quark than with InDesign.

InDesign is pretty awesome in comparison.

What I find really sad is that a seemingly intelligent business person would come to a support forum populated with volunteers, not to seek help or offer it, but simply to make a statement against the host.

Would you attend a social function and show up yelling and screaming about something that the landlord had done? Something that had nothing to do with anyone else attending that function?

You're either part of the solution or part of the problem around here. Some of us just like to help others. Why? I'm sure if you took a poll you'd find that most of the people giving out help, started out here receiving it from perfect strangers. I can assure you it's not because we don't have lives.

Finally, this "system" was put in place by Adobe to allow users to have a place to help each other. I challenge you to find a better source of help anywhere for anything.

Bob

If the landlord is hosting the meeting and there is a good chance (possibly the only chance) you will be heard by that landlord. Then yes. If the group is discussing that the landlord has not fixed the leaking pipes and we all have water damage because of it. Then yes. If we the tenants are forced to do the pumping ourselves and at our expense. Then yes. If the landlord wants the tenants to pay them to have the pipes fixed. Then yes.

And i was referring to the system that Eugene has employed to keep InDesign under control.

This forum is great. The users are great (most of them...hehehe). The knowledge here is great.

I was never against that. Just the landlord i pay rent to.

Erm... I didn't invent the system, it was handed down to me. I've been using it for nearly 10 years - and even before I had InDesign.

Files are just data, and data builds up, and if it builds up it can cause corruption. I even play a game on my computer that requires me to do a Save As to keep the file size down, the speed of the game in order and to stop the game file being corrupt.

Yeh I have a system - and I know how to fix stuff to a certain degree.

And I very rarely have to keep InDesign "under control". I have issues like anyone else, but it's usually something I can fix. If it's not then I ask here. Because this has a solid base of beginner, intermediate and advanced users who can confirm or deny the issues and suggestions to fix them.

You really aren't contributing any helpful comments here for the OP, you're just stirring trouble and provoking arguments, which is known as trolling. If you have issues with Adobe perhaps you should start your own thread for discussion.

I was not expecting the word "troll" to be used no more than the phrase "fan-boy".

Those are thrown around when someone disagrees.

That's just silly. You have no interest in resolving the OPs question.

Better that than some other stuff I've got...

Just to confirm that the solution that Lux provided (to remove all guides from the master pages) did not work for my document. I tried that and actually removed all master pages, creating a new, empty master page in their stead.

I had tried that before any of my previous posts in this thread.

Well go make your childish statement somewhere else. Those who are having real problems don't need to be teased with this nonsense. If you've got a fix post it. If don't, then run along.

One thing I can assure you that you won't get...and that's people rallying 'round you.

I would hate to live in a world ruled by your ideals. Things would never change. I obviously have real problems that are keeping me and my team focused on working them out (for free). There is no time to rack up 11,355 posts. We envy you.

This is a forum on Adobe's website. It is not run by a private party. This is Adobe's game. They through the ball and we are not playing. I can't speak for you, but we have paid tens of thousands of dollars to a company over the past 15+ years. We deserve better than this.

I understand your motivation to have us all sit around the campfire, hold hands, and sing pleasant songs... but not this time. We will share once Adobe gives us $40. That simple. Don't take it personally. Instead, rally behind our actions. Like I said before, if Adobe can do it to us, we can do it to Adobe.

This banter aside, the basic problem remains: it is not possible to create a PDF from an InDesign CS5 Document. I have a 700 page book that I need to get into a PDF document so I can send it to the printer. If anyone has a solution (Adobe included) it would be most appreciated. Thank you.

Hi China,

After hours of tech support, we found that most of my problems was with CS4 legacy files (especially books) and figured out a workaround. You have to export your file(s) to IDML file. Then open again. To me this is not a good solution not to mention time consuming to have to do this to hundreds of legacy files but it works for me.

Let me know if it helps.

I have been experiencing the same problems with files created in CS5, so it can't be a legacy issue for me. I have battled with making HR pdf's for printers for months now, and I've tested all the elements eg text to outlines, deleting guides etc and the only thing that works every time is pasting the artwork into a new document. It must be a bug to do with document setup??

Try that next time!

I'd like to try to get to the bottom of this and help as many customers as I can, with a workaround, by driving a fix, or in any other ways. But to do that, I need some way to reproduce the problem. I'd be especially grateful if one of the users who had the issue solved by updating their .joboptions could post the original .joboptions, and a document that demonstrates the problem when trying to export it.

Anyone who has a case that consistently shows this problem, try to reproduce it with the fonts and links missing (to minimize the data you'd need to post) and if that still fails, then post the file, and your .joboptions which you are choosing when you export. If using custom settings, save it as a new .joboptions (preset) file and include it.

If you need a place to post the files, try our free Acrobat.com file storage and sharing. Or send me information for your FTP siste, etc. You can email me directly by consulting my profile here.

Sincerely,

Matthew

Hi,

I'm having the same trouble when exporting to a Pdf (print). I started with a cs3-template that i opened and saved in cs5.

After i have run some scripts Indesign crashes when exporting to pdf. I get the notice "Indesign needs to close, ...". But in the process-list i still have to kill "indesign.exe" or indesign refuses to start up again.

Opening the indd again gives me a chance to export it once.

I'm searching what causes the export to fail, but i haven't pinpointed it out yet.

But I have a question:

Is it only on Windows or is it also on Macintosh?

Greetz,

Glen

The problem seems to be present on both platforms.

If anyone has a file that consistently refuses to export, I think Matthew Laun might be interested in seeing it. Of course none of the files that gave me trouble before will mis-behave now, so I'm not doing well  in providing test fodder.

You can contact Matthew by clicking on his name on his post above and sening him a private message -- don't send a file until he asks you, and be preapred to wait for a response since this is vacation week at Adobe.

I just upgraded to CS5 and have been experiencing the same problems with PDF export. The progress bar in the Background Tasks window stalls out between 9-14 percent, and the only way to close the document is to do a force quit.

Restarting the system (not just InDesign) seems to correct the problem temporarily, but it shows up again after a few PDFs are exported.

I've had it happen with legacy CS4 documents as well as newly created CS5 documents. But it seems to happen more consistently with legacy documents, and most consistently with legacy documents that include drop shadows. Those almost always fail. (I have not tested any pages with other types of transparency.)

I'll be happy to share any documents and will be in touch with Matthew to see if he's interested.

This bug is a show-stopper. Can't use CS5 until it gets fixed.

Steve
