Hi friends. I have recently switched to CS5 and I find that I usually need to close the program and then reopen it before I can make a PDF. It says it is working in the background but all it does is spin without creating the PDF. Anyone else having this problem?

The documents I have seen this in are originally made in earlier versions of InDesign.

I'm not sure why no-one has posted this yet, but I think an update to 7.0.2 released a month ago may fix some or all PDF exporting problems:

The export hang problem is not addressed in the 7.0.2 update, sadly.

If it were happening to a lot of people you'd know about it by now. I suspect something else going on there especially given the glowing endorsement of an archaic workflow.

The problem is known to Adobe and they are working on it. There is a fundamental problem with the new export to pdf. The solution is to either
save as postscript and distill or print to pdf. The only (huge) disadvantage with this is that of course you lose keeping hyperlinks in the pdf which can either be a show-stopper or in our case an inconvenience (for checking the x-ref in the pdf).
There is also a huge bug in the running heads. Again this is being worked on, however it seems that this error may only be in right-to-left documents.
I have been informed that unfortunately these bugs probably won't fixed in the next dot release, but they are being worked on.
We have printed thousands of books with this text bug that we have been debating whether to shred or hope that in the 25 cases that the bug manifests itself (it took us a while before we were aware of this) just to let it go.
We now have a team of people carefully checking pdfs for these two bugs on the jobs that we can't go back to CS4 in easily.

lol
Well, thanks for that Bob. ;—)
(Though, this is where I would generally hear it first, as we did with the other PDF output errors.)
I know from past experience that, with thousands of users. one person's problem is not necessarily an indication of a bug.
I'll never ignore you, either ;—)
But on this version we've already experienced very expensive output bugs, so I'm being more cautious.
Personally, I'm not yet confident enough of CS5's stability to put a lot of time or money on the line with it. That may change in 3 months. But, for now, I'm maintaining a financially prudent skepticism.
Still.... there are some cool features in CS5. (Not including the missing "off switch" for Frame Edge Highlighting - ooof! ;—)
Cheers

yes, we have exactly the same issue on our InDesign CS5 ME with Hebrew fonts. As you say, printing to either ps or actually even directly to pdf (we are on Windows 7) solves the problem.
I'm glad to know it's not just on Hebrew and on the Middle Eastern version of InDesign.
I would respectfully suggest you ignore Bob Levine's dismissive comments. He is so wrong.

I'm not being dismissive, but I that was the only complaint I was aware of.
However, I would caution about comparing ME and standard versions of InDesign. And without knowing what's going on with those files, it would be very difficult to analyze.

Wow! Wait, let's not start confusing multiple issues here.
This thread was started with the issue that background PDF exports were not completing, leaving the application in a state where the PDF never finished being created, and the application had to be force quit because of the outstanding background task. This is a known issue, the root cause is understood, a solution designed, and we hope to make this available in a future update.
Raphael's issue is something I've worked directly with him on, and it is specific to right to left writing systems using the ME version of InDesign from Winsoft. Winsoft has provided us with a fix, as we share code with them in our partnership, and we hope it will make it's way into future updates of the ME version (as well as the standard versions from Adobe, due to how it is included, even though they don't support right to left writing).
If someone has a failure that falls outside of these two known issues, please start a new thread and post a cross reference here.

Thanks Matthew
That's very much the kind of info I was looking for.

But Clement is having the same problem and I don't think he is using the ME version of InDesign and it's certainly, according to his screen shot, not with right to left text.

Thanks for info. I am not using ME version, but standard Int. English. However, I am checking up version, how, who and where the document is originally made.

For those people too lazy to read all the posts correctly (Like Myself) Bob has helped me out by creating a new book, adding the doc to the new book and exporting from there, books export in the foreground.
Thanks to Bob and all the others who are helping with this issue.
Have a good one

I have had problems making PDFs and exporting IDML files as well. The background tasks panel just freezes. I have to force quit. I had started my own thread about it and was re-directed here. I posted this in my thread, but I thought I would share this here in too case it helps get to the bottom of the issue.
Just thought I'd throw this other tidbit out there.
As far as PDF exporting... the hang-up seems to only happen when I am trying to export a file that uses a font that cannot be embedded into the PDF due to licensing issues. It's a free font that I downloaded from dafont.com - I had no issues using it with CS3.
But, I think, pehaps, the warning that the font can not be embedded is what is causing the hang-up.
But, it does not explain the problem with exportind as IDML files.

We're having problems exporting PDFs or overwriting PDFs that are associated with open emails. Adobe just told me there weren't any KNOWN issues - yet within seconds I found plenty of feedback on their own forum. What's up? They told me the issue was Apple's Mail. Unreal. Thousands of dollars and we've had so many problems with CS5. Unreal.

BTW - running 7.0.3 already. The problem has been happening since we upgraded in July.

Thanks for the reply Peter. Through the forums last night, we learned that many people are having the exact same problem. The problem occurs when you try to overwrite a PDF (from InDesign CS5) that is/was attached to a recent email created with Apple's Mail program (while Mail is open). We're addressing the problem on another forum. The only solution to date is to close Mail.
What's upsetting is how fast Adobe was to claim there weren't any "known reports of such problems" - yet the 10 seconds we spent searching their own forum revealed otherwise. Whether it's an Adobe product or an Apple product, Adobe could extend the courtesy of researching a little longer. 90% of the time we call Adobe we're put on the defensive when they immediately start denying any concerns. CS5 freezes on a daily basis, on a brand new Mac. I'd like to spend more time producing work than discussing problems on the phone with Adobe. Tech Support with CS5 was been very disappointing.
When and if we narrow down the concern with Mail, we'll post it here because the problem we have is while exporting from InDesign CS5.
All the best,
Christa

Adobe won't have a record of it unless someone tells them.

Thanks, if there's a need to complete the form we will. First we'll call Apple, Mail is full of issues itself.
And yes, the file was saved on the hard drive already. That's why we were "overwriting". Only happens when you overwrite for us.
Enjoy your day!

InDesign will not be allowed [by the OS] to overwrite a file that has a lock from another process [Mail]. There's simply nothing that we can do about that. You'll see the same thing if you try to overwrite a PDF that is locked by [open in] Acrobat, Reader or Preview. When we say we don't know of this issue, it means it's not made it's way into our knowledgebase through the process of being escalated to senior technical staff by our technical support agents. Now that I'm aware of it, I'll try to reproduce it to confirm the details, then I can document it. But that won't change the results. You'll still need to remove the lock. If that means quiting Mail, then that's what you'll need to do. Once confirmed, I will communicate this to our internal Adobe Applie liaison, who can then in turn communicate to his Apple contacts, but if and when they would resolve the issue can't be guaranteed.

RESOLVED - FOR ME - FINALLY.
I have tried a number of things to resolve this issues since upgrading to CS5, and none of what I've read in the forums (here and elsewhere) has resolved PDF exporting in the background for me. (Mac, 10.6.5, 8 gb RAM), other than a javascript that ran the export in the FOREGROUND rather than in the background.
I called Adobe today and am pleased to say that the issue was resolved using a method I had NOT read about anywhere over the past few months, and it was simple: Quit all running Adobe apps, then move the "Datasource" file located here to the desktop or to the trash:
HD / Library / Application Support / Adobe / SING / Mark II / Datastore
Relaunch InDesign and try exporting a PDF. This completely resolved the issue for me, and is a huge relief.
Hope that's helpful to some of you. I feel your pain.
