Problems with exporting fonts

Novato ,

I came across an unprecedented problem when exporting InDesign file to pdf.

All the text as well as hidden characters done with Gill Sans regular cut opened as squares in pdf file... But there wasn't any problem with light, semibold or italic cut! They printed out as they were seen in original InDesign file on the screen. (And I should have all the different cuts of this font in my font library.)

Of course, "create outlines" command solved the problem on pages where I had just couple of words. But I can't make vectors about larger text boxes with tabs...

I still have CS4 version in my iMac.

Could anyone help with this?

Please excuse me for asking, but there are all kinds of Gill Sans around. Which one you've got could be part of the problem here:

Gill Sans Std can be an Adobe OpenType font. It would serve well in PDFs and is cross-platform capable for output from Windows systems as well as Macs. It's the Gold Standard for creating cross-platform compatible documents.

Gill Sans can be a Postscript Type 1, Type 3 or TrueType font. Type 1 Postscript fonts work fine with Acrobat. Type 3 Postscript often does not. An

Don't outline the font! Yikes!

Gill Sans can be a Postscript Type 1, Type 3 or TrueType font. Type 1 Postscript fonts work fine with Acrobat. Type 3 Postscript often does not. And TrueType fonts, depending on the type house, can work transparently with Acrobat or cause all kinds o' problems.

And of course, if that cut of the font is corrupted somehow, it can cause problems no matter what type of font that is.

If you use a third-party font manager like Suitcase, which includes Font Doctor, it might be worth running the font through a font checking utility to see if it has any problems with the font itself.

Thanks a lot!

My Gill Sans version was - of course - TrueType font. But thanks to your answer I changed it to Gill Sans Std and now it works without problem!
