Product Catalog using Excel and Indesign

What is the best way to data merge/import an excel file into indesign, while being able to control the design of the data? I am trying to link one main excel file to my indesign document, while the header, description and price can all be formatted to my design. The catalog will have a large number of products that have technical data with them, so being able to update the file efficiently is what I want.

I used the data merge function and a MS Excel file to create complex catalogues of products that included text, data, images and it worked well.

I found that it takes a couple of tests and strong discipline of consistency to make sure it is stable.

thanks IDEAS-Training for the tips, I will check them out

There are a number of plugins you can look at...

    Em Software InData and InCatalog

    Teacup Software DataLinker

    65 bit EasyCatalog

I've use InData quite a bit and it works great.
