Question

Punjabi compatible fonts?

I'm looking for recommendations on Punjabi compatible fonts:

I'm working on foreign language InDesign documents that must become accessible PDFs.

The translator company applied Noto Sans Gurmukhi to the Punjabi ID file. This typeface is compatible with several other Asian languages. However, for Punjabi, it presents character encoding issues.

I've applied Punjabi lang to each paragraph style and then set the Acrobat lang to pa. This results in the charcter encoding issue.

I've also applied "no language" to the each paragraph stytle and the sent the Acrobat lang to pa. This results in the character encoding issue.

I think that accessible non-Latin-script PDFs from InDesign are currently impossible. That's what you are talking about, right? Your Punjabi text is rendering just fine in Acrobat, but it's throwing an error in Acrobat's accessibility check? That's your "character encoding issue" correct?

The last time I checked (some months ago, well before the release of InDesign 2025), this was the case in essentially any complex-script writing system.

I had to dig for a minute, but I found a rather longer discussion of this issue as it relates to Nepali and Burmese.
