Push text outside of a text box

I opened up an old file someone else created and found that the asterisk is pushed outside of the text box.
How do you recreate this?

The text box is is only 1 column and the asterisk is apart of the live copy. I can not find any special indent adjustments, tabs, or formatting that may explain it.
If I start a new hard return in the text box and enter a second asterisk, it then also gets pushed out of the text box. This does not happen if i create an entirely new text box which makes me think it has to do with the formatting of the text box.
