random "S" capitalisation end of words issue

Hi

I am working on a 500 page book in german and have had this problem for a while.

Randomly I get the last letter of words ending with "s" changed to a capital "S". So for example houses would suddenly be changed to houseS (see also screeshots attached).

I work with ID 16.4 and have so far tried to reset preferences and deleted the cache, neither autocorrect nor dynamic spelling are enabled.

Does anyone have any suggestions how I could fix this?

I think that when you want save the document you press accidentally Shift + s instead of Command + s.

hi Leena,

the uppercase letter "S" appears only in the place where the lowercase "s" should be, so it cannot be accidentally pressed "shift + s" as you think

when exactly does this happen with the "S" at the end of a word?

If you assign a paragraph style?

If you assign a character style?
Already when you import the text to InDesign?

What's strange with paragraph style "Merve text 10 pt" for example:

Properties of text, that are usually used with Japanese only:

Kinsoku: Soft Kinsoku
Grid Alignment: Standard

And one character property that is usually used with the Middle East/NorthAfrica version of InDesign when you change from Hebrew or Arabic to English or e.g. German:

character direction: Left To Right

Can you tell something more about your workflow?
How do you import the text? Is the text's origin a Microsoft Word file perhaps?

And then the used fonts. How are they installed?

Thanks very much for taking the time!

On a positive note, since replacing all the (50 or so) rogues with Eugene's grep finder yesterday it doesn't seem to happen anymore.

I think it would still be worth checking my font settings are all clean to avoid future issues in case the problem comes back.

I see what you mean with Merve text 10 pt, didn't notice the settings you mention before.

They don't seem to originate in ID, how do I get rid of them? Or shall I trash the style and replace with a new one?

I have many paragraph and character styles applied to the text which partially originated in word and there are a few japanese /korean/greek/russian characters in a couple of references, hence the fonts which are installed on my machine and setup as character styles. The imports from word where mapped to the styles in ID, (a technique which I abandoned later) and I did find some leftover character settings which weren't supposed to be there. The S would appear in any paragraph,,,
