Re: InDesign is shutting down. A Serious Error was detected

I'm having the same problem. I can't get anything done. The 'serious error' occurs on various files and InDesign is useless as of now. Resetting preferences didn't seem to do anything.

I am extremely frustrated with InDesign shutting down unexpectedly. I've done EVERYTHING that's been recommended. I've went through my fonts with a fine tooth comb. There is absolutely NO rhyme or reason as to when it will crash. Just now, I was in Story Editor, doing a search/replace and it crashed. No warning.

It will crash at least 3-5 times every time I'm on deadline with my weekly newspaper. When it does, it will sometimes delete columns of copy, so I'll have to redo them. I've taken to creating copies of the original file, just in case.

I'm running Mac OS 10.12.6 with 32GB RAM and plenty of hard drive space. Any help would be appreciated as I'm beyond frustrated!

This is the error log I received after it crashed:

I removed your bug report for two reasons:

(`1) If you wanted to post a bug report this is the wrong place. Bugs should be reported at this website:

Feature Requests/Bugs

(2) Even if you thought there would be someone who could interpret the bug report here, you should use pastebin.com and copy a link to the bug report.

My apologies for posting what I thought might be helpful getting this issue resolved, Steve but it doesn’t change the fact there is a serious error within InDesign and it affects my work productivity. I pay $50 a month for the CC and expect the software to work, not crash repeatedly like beta software.

Given there were Adobe staff responding in this thread, I thought it would be appropriate to post all the information I had instead of piece-meaning the problem.

I apologize for not giving your earlier posting more attention when I responded. I think this is the key thing you said:

"Perhaps it has something to do with Google Drive File Stream? Maybe since InDesign files and associated assests aren't located on my local HD there presents an issue. The thing is, sometimes it will open, but it takes FOREVER."

There have been several postings in InDesign and Google forums about the incompatibility of Google Drive File Stream and InDesign. Here are three examples:

google file stream and Indesign issues.

Working on InDesign from Google FileStream

Cannot save to Google Drive File Stream drive

InDesign has NO problem with other server based solutions like DropBox and OneDrive. That suggests that problem is Google's to fix, not InDesign.

Hi Markus,

As per your query, InDesign is shutting down when you move something, anything on a page or try to move to the next page in a document. In this case, I would suggest you to open a new document and check if that works. If it is showing the same behavior on a new document as well please share the following details:

  • Operating System(Exact Version of Windows and MAC)
  • Where the files are saved(System folder/ Network drive/ External HDD)

Regards,

Srishti

What version of InDesign and what operating system are you using?

Have you tried uninstalling and then reinstalling using the following method?:

In the app section of your Creative Cloud desktop app click on the “V” next to the app’s (InDesign) name and choose the “Uninstall” option from the pull-down menu that appears. After you’ve run the uninstall then use the Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool Use the Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems  . Then reinstall the program through the Desktop app. Before you reinstall, once again trash all preference files to make sure that your install is completely clean. Then launch InDesign and see if the problem persists.

I'm using InDesign CC 2018 on a late 2016 MacBook Pro (MacOS Sierra 10.12.6).

I went through the Creative Cloud Cleaner and although the steps didn't seem to match up with what my computer did, it still didn't fix anything. I had to re-download every Adobe app all over again.

Perhaps it has something to do with Google Drive File Stream? Maybe since InDesign files and associated assests aren't located on my local HD there presents an issue. The thing is, sometimes it will open, but it takes FOREVER.

I have seen a number of performance problems reported with using the Google Drives. Have you tried working on and saving to your hard drive and then backing up at the end of each work session? See if working this way works better for you.
