Repeating text

Community Beginner ,

I know I worked on a document a few years ago that did this, and for the life of me I can't remember nor figure out how to do it, and it was simpler than using Cross-References.

Building a template, and at the top is has the Document Type (Proposal, Memo, etc.) in large type. This field, to call it something, then repeats on every page after page 2 in the footer. The way it's been done here in the past is simply putting the information in the master pages and updating the master pages manually.

Yes, I can do it with Cross References, but it requires to have the users open the Cross-References panel and update manually. Since this will be handled by a large number of users, I am trying to make it as easy as possible.

Is there a way to have the text update automatically? I know that I worked on a document that when I updated a section name, the section name would update automatically from there on out until it was changed again.

Any ideas? Thank you kindly,

-roy

When you want things like sections and similar items to be dynamically generated in page headers and footers (examples, a traditional printed phone directory or dictionary), you're talking about using variables.

See Adobe's online help for details at https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/using/text-variables.html

Just one caveat with text variables: InDesign deals with them as a single chunck of typo. That means that, if they are at the end of a line or almost, you'd get very bad results visually.

Until Adobe manages them to behave as strings of text that have their own spacing and H&J, they are not so useful as they could be, I am afraid. So beware.

"InDesign deals with them as a single chunck of typo."

Yes, that's important. And, to be more explicit about it, no matter what the variable contains, the entire thing is treated, and behaves, as a single character.
