Question

Resize text after liquid layout scale

Hi

I'm using liquid layout to turn A4 landscape pages into A4 portrait pages in a document. I've moved the pages over and used the page tool and then liquid layout, scale and then I click the portrait icon. It scales the content onto the page and I can then rearrange it. The only problem is it has scaled down the text which has a paragraph style applied to it and I can't get it to scale back up to the original font size. The size box shows the actual font size of the paragraph style (11pt) but in parenthesis next to it there is the actual size that the font has been scaled to (7.7pt). Is there a way to revert to my paragraph style and make this text bigger or am I stuck with it like this? Also is there a better way of using liquid layout that doesn't scale the text size but gets all the content to fit on the new page orientation?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Jo

1. Select all texts and objects in the page.

2. Click the Control Panel icon.

3. Choose Redefine Scalling as 100%.

Now apply your new paragraph and character styles easily.

Same question.

It's a very useful tool but falls short for me. I have a large A4 document that my client wants to convert to A5. I used the alternative layout function to create it. The best match was achieved using the 'Scale' option.

However, the A5 document retains a link to the original sizes. All items on the page are constrained by a 70.7% reduction. Making it difficult to correctly type set or re-size as you're not seeing accurate sizes. This makes it difficult for tweaking styles.

Can you 'flatten' the doc to 100% and save it as a new file?

It has to be 100% accurate as this is going to print on a large scale. I'm not confident the file has kept it's integrity.

Thanks

Will

Hello,

I know what you mean, it seems a little tricky to get the exact outcome you need.

It sounds like you might be having a similar issue to the one I had. I found that this suggestion by BarbBinder above worked for me to 'unscale' text. https://indesignsecrets.com/an-alternate-way-to-create-a-scaled-alternate-layout.php

It is a little time consuming so I don't know if it would work for you with a 'text-heavy' document as it may feel like it takes too long. You have to redefine as 100% and then clear the overriders on the styles. There doesn't appear to be a way to do this in one hit.

I'm not sure what you mean when you say 'flatten' to 100%. Do you mean 'scale up to 100%?'

I expect there are better placed experts on here who will be able to assist you better than I...

Thanks, Jo

Thanks for that.

I've come to the conclusion that I'll have to re-work the entire document using the 'export' as a guide. So liquid layout is good in principle, but not for print production when accurate type styles are essential.

I can't type set a corporate report in 26pt (18.4pt) or 18pt (12.7pt) with strict guidelines. It doesn't even factor in the leading as well

If only you could re-set to 100% by re-saving. Then just edit your styles.

Shame, for a moment I thought I'd found a silver bullet.

Thanks

Will

Frankly, Liquid Layout has a certain learning curve, if you dare to invest your time. Here's some readings on it.

For simple tasks, did you consider trying its predecessor, Layout Adjustment, instead?

Not even near so fancy and powerful, but much easier to catch on the fly. Well, actually, there's nothing to catch at all

Yes I've viewed a tutorial on YouTube about liquid layout and didn't get the desired affect and nothing other than scale seemed to have an effect. I've just installed InDesign CC 13.0, I can't find Layout Adjustment under Layout menu, do you know where it is located please?

You must have used the Scale liquid layout rule? You might try Object-based, which allows to set pins to pin down objects. For example, you could pin a text frame to the top and right of the landscape page, and it will stay in that position when you change the paper size. See images below.

If you prefer to use scaling, take a look at this article for alternative technique:

Thanks, I will take a look at that. I did use scaling and it worked, whereas all the other options didn't seem to have any affect but I don't want the text size reduced just the content fitted into an A4 portrait rather than landscape.

Enable Layout Adjustment is an option within the Layout > Margins & Columns.

If you want to continue to use Scale, did you read the latter half of the blog post I linked to, which explains how to remove the type size changes?
