Return jumps to next column

Something really weird here. I'm adding to a document that I started several years ago using InDesign CS5.5 on a iMac. I'm now using InDesign 19.3 on a new iMac with Sonoma 14.4.1.

On the added new pages, hitting return starts a new paragraph and hitting enter starts on the next column; as it should. However, the text on the older pages have reflowed and does not behave the same; both return and enter jumps to the next column. The same paragraph and text styles used are the same in the old and new pages. I've tried new text boxes on the old pages to no avail.

Any insights would be much appreciated as I'm getting bald enough without tearing out any more hair.

As a follow-up to my previous message, it seems that the Span Columns setting needed to be reset in each text box.

That seems to have been the fix.

Thank you all for your help.

What is set in the Keep Options of the ParaStyle applied to the jumping paragraph?

I had checked prior to posting and it's the same Pargraph Style for both instances with no over-rides.

That's quite a jump in versions and the text engines have changed. First thing I would do is a full recompose of the text. The keyboard shortcut on Mac is cmd+opt+/. Give it a try and see if it helps.

Also, current version of InDesign is 19.4.

I selected the text, in one text box, and hit cmd+opt+/ to no apparent change. Can you please explain/expand on how/what/why recomposing of text?

It apppears to have something to do with span columns settings. I'll investigate further.

The recompose shortcut forces InDesign to reflow the text. See https://creativepro.com/force-text-reflow-when-indesign-forgets-to-flow-the-text/ for more details.

Would you like to share a page or two of your file? I'm happy to take a look..
