Screen Flashing When Dragging Objects | InDesign 19.0.1 on Mac Mini M1, MacOS Sonoma 14.1.1

Screen capture attached--it happens a few seconds in.

I'm experiencing a persistent screen flashing issue with Adobe InDesign version 19.0.1 on my Mac Mini M1, which is running MacOS Sonoma 14.1.1. This problem began after updating to the new MacOS version last night, and I didn't encounter it prior to this update.

Here are the specifics of my setup:

  • Computer: Mac Mini M1
  • Operating System: MacOS Sonoma 14.1.1
  • InDesign Version: 19.0.1
  • Additional Setup: I use DisplayLink software (just updated, no change) to run two additional monitors.

The issue occurs when I drag objects around in InDesign - the screen will flash white right when the drag is started. I have tried several suggested solutions, including adjusting GPU Performance settings in InDesign (grayed out), toggling Overprint Preview, and hiding rulers, but none of these have resolved the issue.

Given that this started occurring after the latest MacOS update last night and seems to be a common issue based on my research, I'm wondering if there is a known fix or workaround that I might have missed. Is this a compatibility issue with the latest MacOS and InDesign version? I would greatly appreciate any advice or guidance on how to resolve this.

Turning off the rulers may help, but the current "fix" is to roll back to Ventura 13.6 until InDesign is supported on Sonoma. You can keep an eye on this page to see when that happens:

And yes, this is a priority for Adobe and no, we don't know what the hold up is. I'll note that it is up to us as users to confirm that our critical software will run on the next OS, prior to updating.

I too now have this issue after updating my macOS to Sonoma yesterday. Any updates on fixing this issue? It is very annoying.

Just roll through this thread--I have a Mac Mini, so, I can't do the turn off the GPU trick which everyone seems to love--however, turning off the rulers does help quite a bit--not completely, but, it does help about 90% of the time. I'm sure it will get fixed in the next update, they are usually pretty good at pushing those kind of fixes.

As discussed in the countless other threads on this topic, this is a Sonoma bug and needs to be fixed by Apple. Your choices are:

  • Turn off rulers in InDesign
  • Turn on GPU Performance in InDesign preferences (if your computer allows)
  • Roll back to Ventura

Min specs for Adobe InDesign does not include Sonoma as an Operating System

Probably why - I think other users had similar issues regarding flashing screens
Searching the forums would be where I'd start. But I can't remember off the top of my head.

A common one is to turn off GPU performance in InDesign Preferences.

Sorry can't be much more help.
