Screen Flickering & Menu not opening Issue on macOS Sonoma

Hello,

I am fieldtesting macOS Sonoma and I encounter a few (very) annoying bugs with the latest Adobe CC apps (all up to date). For Photoshop I have the 2024 version, for all other apps mentioned it's the latest 2023 version of the app.

Bug 1: Adobe Indesign. The page is "flickering" when moving an object with the selection tool. This flickering can be avoided when hiding the "rulers" in Adobe Indesign with  CMD + R

Bug 2: Adobe Indesign, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop (2024 release): When moving a panel to a secondary computerscreen the submenu can no longer be accessed. When moving that panel to the primary computerscreen it works just fine.

Adobe (and I do hope Adobe reads this) … are these Adobe CC related issues, or something Apple has to fix?  For many professionals this will be extremely annoying if this doesn't get fixed. As I mentioned, I am only field testing this at home, … not in a production environment, as I have the policy NOT to upgrade right away. That's why I'm field testing.

Thanks in advance!

Hi @John Beeckaert ,

Thank you for sharing the file. We have already logged a bug for the two known issues on macOS Sonoma. We do have workarounds for both issues, so for the first issue wherein the screen is flickering, you can try hiding the rulers, or you can enable GPU from preferences. For the second issue, in which the sub-menu is not opening on an external monitor, you can create a new user account. I will update the discussion as soon as I hear from the team.

Thanks

@The Orchard Ellijay… you have 2 options for now to solve this for now.
1) If your monitor and GPU supports it (important, because that checkbox is not always checkable), you can check the box for "GPU Performance" in the Indesign Preferences
2) Hide the rulers with CMD+R if they are visible, or activate the "overprint preview".

Hi,

We're currently in the process of testing and optimizing our latest apps to run on macOS 14 Sonoma, more details here. You can check the system requirement page for InDesign to check the list of compatible operating systems. For information on known issues in InDesign, please check this article

Turn off the rulers in InDesign. This seems to help a lot of people.

I installed Sonoma last week and I've only just started having the same issue. The hide ruler trick and holding 's' worked a treat, so thanks for the temp hacks!

Other users report similar issues on Sonoma. Try to play with the GPU Performance preference - it helped some users. If it doesn't help then you may need to revert back to Ventura as InDesign doesn't officially support Sonoma yet.

It is never a good idea to update to a brand new operating system. It must be kept in mind that when a new OS is being developed it does not take into account any third party software and how it will run on the new OS. Software manufacturers such as Adobe and others must always wait and see what is needed to make their product compatible after the OS is released. It's always a game of catch-up. I personally always wait several months (or even longer) before updating. In following this forum it can usually be seen when is a good time for updating. It's when the posts about InDesign and other programs not functioning properly with the OS trickle down to few to none. This usually happens after several OS bug fixes and compatibility upgrades of the software.

Some users have reported that turning the rulers off did help them with InDesign on Sonoma. But, the same advice is still the same, one should not rush to an update untill things settle even if the company says that the app is fully supported.

I update my system to Sonoma (Mac Pro) a few days ago and I'm tryng to run down a problem I now have with Indesign.

Now, when selecting text manually, 'dragging the cursor across a length of text while right pressing the mouse,' the screen flickeres and goes white.   It stays white until I let up on the mouse.  This appears to be happning only in InDesign.  I have to repeatedly select copy to make sure I have selected the copy I want bcause I'm essentialy doing so blind.

Has anyone else run across this since updating to Sonoma (Mac Pro)

You'll find countless other posts on this if you look around. Right now the workaround seems to be turning off the InDesign rulers. InDesign is not yet compatible with Sonoma. If you made a backup, rolling back to Ventura is really your best bet.

Hi - I've tried to roll back to Ventura but when I restore from a previous backup Sonoma installs automatically.

So it looks like it's going to be 'Command + R' until a fix is found.

Check your GPU performance settings in Indesign... make sure GPU Performance + Animated Zoom is enabled.

After chatting to Adobe online, this fixed my strobing/flickering screen when highlighting text...
