I need a serif font with a glyph for the Latin aa (shown above). I placed a Word doc into InDesign with the text in Times New Roman. The glyph displays when I view the source doc in Word but not when I place the text in InDesign. I tried entering the Unicode (U+A733) but still got the missing glyph. Searching the Glyphs Panel with the code doesn't find it either. Thanks in advance for any help!

Not sure why it's not showing up when you place the Word doc; I haven't been a Mac user in a few years, but I suspect that you have multiple versions of TNR installed in multiple locations. However, assuming that you are using a version of the font that has the glyph, finding it in the Glyphs panel shouldn't be hard for you - just dont use the "U+####" format, just use the Unicode value without the U+:

Good stuff, @Joel Cherney  - I hadn't checked myself - but did the same thing as you

It does show up for me too.

That being said - if the OP can't get the aa to work in their document there are workarounds.

It's likely the font doesn't have the glyph and Word is substituting the glyph and it's likely to be display only (so not in print likely)

When you're missing a glyph in InDesign you can try another similar font that might have that glyph - I mean if the font doesn't have the glyph what else can you do?

If you must have that character in Times - then maybe you can fake it using a Character Style to reduce the space between the characters - then you can apply that with a GREP style within your paragraph styles.

If you need help setting that up let us know.

Similarly - you can set a GREP style for your paragraph styles that would change aa to another font that supports the ligature glyph.

Let us know which option such suits you and if you need help setting it up.
