Setting Part and Chapter running heads

Need help with setting part heads.

Book has part heads on the verso page, chapter heads on the recto. There are 5 parts to the book and more than a dozen chapters.

No problem with setting recto chapter heads using the master pages (insert "section").

Tried setting part heads using text variables. The part heads are identified by paragraph style in the table of contents. I set the text variable "Part Head", using the paragraph style, on the master page, but it is only picking up the first part header from the contents page, labeling all parts with that header. I thought that the text variable option referenced the contents page and set the part header according to the associated page number, but it's not doing that. How does the text variable work? Do I have to create separate master pages for each part (like in the old days), each with it's own verso header?

The Section Header variable is set to pull its information from the ToC/section style which, correct me if I'm wrong, only occurs in the TOC. That's why it's the same throughout the entire document. Instead of pointing the variable to a TOC entry style, you need to tell it to look at the paragraph style that's applied in the document for RACE GAMES, SPACE GAMES, CHASE GAMES, and DISPLACE GAMES.

I think!

I can probably help with this, but am having trouble following you. Can you provide some screen shots to help?

Hi Scott,

I'm attaching 3 screen shots:
The first is of the table of contents, showing the paragraph style assigned to the part openers. The second is of the text variable dialog box setup.

The third is of the master page setup.INDD_toc_Assigns.pngINDD_TextVariable.pngINDD_Master Page.png

Thanks, Scott. That's the answer. I did actually learn this years ago, but completely forgot how it was supposed to work--don't know why I latched onto the contents page.
