Share for Review - Gray Boxes behind all images

Good day,

I have been using the new Share for Review for the last little while and am enjoying receiving feedback directly on my documents for import into InDesign. However, this morning I went to a published file and noticed that all of the images in my design now have a light gray square surrounding them. Additionally, the colours and blending on some of the images are all off or look odd. Can anyone shed on any light why this may be? These are documents that aren't new and were already worked on weeks ago and looked normal at the time. Suddenly they don't.

We are facing the same issue with all elements (not only images, also vector objects like rectangles) with effects, not only drop shadows but also others like outer glow. In InDesign and Acrobat it looks fine, but not in the review link.

Hi @ChrissvyV ,

just to clarify things here. Are you seeing the light gray in your InDesign document?

Or is this "only" the representation of the page on the web?

Also note:

The last time I tested "Share for Review", overprinting elements on the page were ignored and showed up as not overprinting. One of the reasons I do not use the feature with any of my customers.

I only see them in the Share for Review. They do not appear in InDesign, nor do they appear on the exported final PDF either.

I think, that can happen any time when transparency is in play. And this is the case with your drop shadow.

It's not clear for me what InDesign is exactly doing when sending out a document with Share for Review. My understanding is that a PDF of "unknown" kind or properties is generated temporarily as an artifact to create the view on the web [*]. And here something is going wrong with transparency reduction.

To come back to my example with overprinting objects:

[1] Two rectangles on the page, one filled with "Yellow", the other one stacked upon with "Cyan".

The "Cyan" one has a fill with overprint enabled. So that with Overprint Preview you'll get a green in the overlap area like that:

When I look into the Links section of my Creative Cloud the preview of that document looks OK:

But the published review is missing the overprint:

[*] And here we have it, the "artifact" that is temporarily stored in a subfolder of my User folder on my machine:

So, something similar happened to your document; only that there is an visible error with perhaps color management on the review showing up on the web. Hm. What kind of color management are you using with that document? Could you share a sample document packaged? Put it on Dropbox, WeTransfer or a similar service and share the download link so that we can see into more details.

Looks like a good old flattening transparency display problem from an effect, likely the dropshadow you have 😉

Two of you experiencing the same issue is suggest an issue with the feature. I suggest reporting this as a bug here: https://indesign.uservoice.com/ and reference this thread.

In the meantime, there are other avenues for collecting PDF comments. Unlil this is resolved, you can export to PDF and then send the file out through Acrobat. https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/using/starting-pdf-review.html

I am experiencing the same thing. I have a variety of images in my ID document - PSDs, JPGs, AIs, and a couple of SVGs. The only images that have the grey box for me are the SVGs. However, they are also the only two images in my document that have drop shadows (as an effect in ID). So it might be the format, or the effect. The drop shadows appear normal, but then they also have the light grey box behind them.

Hi Rosemary,

Interesting what you say about the drop shadow as all of my images have drop shadows, and I'm wondering if that's the issue here!

That's unexpected, Christine. What format are the images? Were they prepared in Photosohp?

The images are all different, but mostly .png, .jpg and maybe the odd .eps. Not done in photoshop. But across multiple share for review files done previously, it doesn't matter the image, every single image has a gray square around it. It's super weird! It's almost as if the Cloud based software changed or it's bugging out across the board. I checked on a different computer thinking maybe it's my computer display settings, but no, the other computer sees the same thing.

Mine is doing the same thing! I'm assuming it won't show up in print or the file saved image but it's still frustrating. Mine isn't doing it to every image, just some random ones.

Certainly. Here is an example of what I'm seeing. I did confirm that my colleague is seeing the same thing. This is for every image in my document.
