Slow InDesign performance on windows 10 new computer

I recently built a new computer. AMD-5900x, 6950xt GPU with 16gb of vram, 64gb of Ram, 4tb nvme, ultra wide monitor 5120 x 1440. Newest version of Indesign. no plug-ins.

I'm working on a document that is one page and doesn't have the text linked or threaded. If I want to use typical display or HQ display I have to press shift f5 to redraw the page after everything I do. In fact I've created a shortcut button on my mouse to do this and I press it after everything I do. If I work on a document with threaded text across multiple pages I have to set it to fast display or it won't work at all.

Any idea about what could be causing this?

Two common things to try would be to reset InDesign preferences and turn off GPU acceleration.

Win systems don't have the two edged sword of GPU acceleration. (I am still curious as to whether it works right for any Mac user, though.)

Prefs and cache would be my first recommendations, too, just based on endless threads about this kind of problem, but on a new system... hmm. Those problems usually come from a faulty or glitched update.

There's the old standby of making sure you have the latest video driver, especially for a fairly extreme setup, but as a new build that also seems unlikely.
