Question

slow to the point of being unusable

Hi I have a mac OS Big sur 11.3.1 and quite frankly since the mac was updated  I lost some programs such as quark xpress because it was not compatible, and all adobe products run slow to the point of being unusable. I just reupdated indesign and now it won't even open. I spend, and I am not kidding one hour every morning restarting my computer, waiting for programs to open and then waiting for files to open, and they are not huge. I am so disgusted. These products were top 10-15 years ago but now with all these continual modifications and new systems Apple and Adobe have gone down hill and cost way too much. There is no service available...email email email or live chats seriously. I do not know what to do, other than buy a pc, and hope adobe works better on that. Any clues as to what I can do in the meantime.

I am not sure how to post replys individually...excuse me my first time here, so to the responses I have so far...

My mac has a 3.1 ghz intel core

memory is 8 gig

Hd is  1tb and 519 gb used

no third party plugins.

my mac is also from around 2017 it was Mojave and I updated to BigSur which is when problems started to arise.

All adobe programs are 2022.

What is an SSD, an external hard drive?

You need to upgrade your RAM to at least 16GB.

If you have your system on an old school hard drive, do yourself a favour and upgrade to a new SSD. The newer OSs just can't cut it on older drives - seriously. I have a 2015 iMac, but around Mojave, I started to notice how long it took to just boot up, and sluggish app response. I cloned my system to a new external SSD and it just flies now.

(Plus it allows me to double boot. I left my internal HDD at Mojave so I could still run my old CS6, but I've upgraded my SSD to the newer current OS's

SSD is a type of drive: solid-state flash technology. It can be a replacement for your internal, but can definitely be an external.

I agree with Derek; 8 GB is not enough these days for the latest OS and apps and could be your pinch point with performance.

What model of Mac do you have? I was assuming it would be an iMac, in which case, it's very likely using an old 5400rpm HDD. It could also be a Fusion drive, which is better.

Although it is possible to replace the internal drive in an iMac, it's not a DIY project as the case needs to be very carefully "cracked open".

However, if you have a Macbook Pro, that vintage should already be using an SSD drive.

Obviously this is not normal InDesign behaviour.

Which version of InDesign?

How much RAM and spare hard disk capacity do you have?

Have you tried resetting the InDesign preferences?

Do you have a third-part plug-in installed, such as a font manager?
