Question

Small caps for first line of paragraph

Hi everybody. I'm new to using nested styles in my paragraphs and have hit a snag.

I want to make the first line of my section paragraphs small caps, but I can't figure out how to get the style to end at the first line instead of pushing the line down and giving me a section of small caps on the second line. It does this even if I insert a hard return as an end point for the style. What am I missing here, or am I asking for the impossible?

Are you setting it up as a line style? Line styles have their own area don't appear as an option with the rest of the nested styles.

If that is what you were doing, what actually happened? When I set up this screen shot, the whole paragraph was switching to drop caps. I had to hit undo and try it a few times before in worked as expected. I haven't seen that before. (InDesign CC 2018).

That's what I was needing, thanks to both of you. But I'm also using 2018 and experiencing the same problem Barb had: it wants to format the whole paragraph to small caps. Undo hasn't done the trick but I'll keep plugging away.

I thought was me... so I backed out and tested the style in the paragraph (you can see the pink Small Caps Test) to make sure the style was working. (It was.) Still changed the whole paragraph. Then I made a new Character style without the small caps and tested it. So I used the new one on the Nested Line Style line—it didn't work, hit undo, and tried again. It worked. Then I switched to the Small Caps and it finally worked.

You have taught me that something is off with nested styles in 2018.

Check out using a Line Style for that.
