Question

Small Caps when I don't want them

I make a paragraph style that does not employ small caps, but when I apply it, it uses small caps.  I then have to uncheck small caps  in the character style panel I do not want to use small caps anywhere.  Why is the type defaulting to using them?  Cheers this is driving me mad.

    Hi Funster1:

It only happens when you assign one particular paragraph style? Is there a nested character style associated with the paragraph style? Check nested styles and GREP styles to see if a character style is being called in automatically.

If it is all new text in that file, then you likely changed a document default. In that case, deselect all text and turn off small caps in the document. See https://www.rockymountaintraining.com/adobe-indesign-setting-and-removing-defaults/ .

Thanks all.  I have one style that adds a few words of small caps after a dropped cap. I deleted that style and styles are now behaving.  So what had I done with that dropcap nested style to make it affect all the styles.  I'd like to re-add the nested style but don't want any more hassle.

    Thanks again.

Something like this where I have a Paragraph Style with no Nested Style or Drop Cap, and [None] as the Character Style named Text:

And then the there is a Paragraph Style named Drop Cap based on the Text style, that has a 2 Line Drop Cap applied with 2 Nested Styles—[None] for the first Drop Cap character, and then a Small Cap Character Style applied to the first 3 words.

Note that is important when using Nested Styles to have no Character Style applied to the nested part of the paragraph. Here my selected text shows as [None] in the Character Style panel
