Space after issue

Community Beginner ,
Nov 19, 2018 Nov 19, 2018

Hi

I'm having an issue with space after in my document. I've set up paragraph and character style sheets and I'm guessing I have done something wrong in there, but I'm been using Indesign for years and never had this issue before. I've looked online and done the things recommended but nothing works!!!

Please help!

Ian

Hi Bob

I’ve worked it out. It was the space between paragraph settings!

Thanks

Ian

What's the issue? What version of InDesign? What operating system?

Great!

It's a cool new feature that is worth exploring when you have time. For lists where you want space above the first bullet and space after the last one but not the ones in between, you can now format the entire list with a single paragraph style.

So, I just found out about this feature, and maybe I'm not using it correctly, but on the document I'm working on, I had to add space to the "space between paragraphs" thing just to get the same result as a normal "space after." This is weird. I'm not trying to do a space after a bulleted list, I'm just trying to get spacing between paragraphs in the normal way. But the "space after" box doesn't do anything to those three paragraphs--they get no spacing at all unless I add the amount into the "space between" box. Irritating. But thanks for pointing out this feature.

Hi chrisuren ,

try the default value for "Space Between". That should be "Ignore" and go ahead like in the older versions of InDesign.

If you changed the default do the following:

With no text selected go to the Pargraph panel and change "Space Between" to "Ignore".

Do not set a value like 0.

Currently I'm not at my machine to test anything.

Let us know how it goes and if my suggestion will work.

Regards,
Uwe

Hi Chris:

I just saw your comment on the InDesign user voice site and was trying to figure out how to respond there, so glad to find your note here, too.

Uwe has the answer to your question—set it to Ignore and it goes back to the old way of working. And my example above shows how you can take advantage of it for lists, for example.

If you have further questions on how to use the software, this is the place to ask them. The user voice site is for bug reports and feature requests.

Hi Ian:

Where specifically are you having issues? Heads? Body paragraphs? Lists? If you share screen shots with your settings showing, we can definitely help.

If you are on InDesign CC 2019 (v14), there is a new feature could be coming into play: Space Between Paragraphs with the Same Style. Edit your style and take a look at the setting in Indents and Spacing. If it is there, try setting it to Ignore.

Hi Barb

I just saw your response and It worked for me once I was able to format the whole Text box by creating a new formating Style. However, what If I just want to add space to a single paragraph... Is there a way to do it by using the SPACE BEFORE or FATER options found in the "workspace" bar, or are these features not functional anymore? cuz I don't seem to be able to use them without creating a new paragraph formatting style. Hope you can help me here. Thx

Jaime
