Spaces are showing as paragraph symbols

I have had this problem for years in all versions of Indesign. I am currently using InDesign CC 2108.

Every time I restart my iMac and open InDesign the spaces in my documents contain the paragraph symbol. The only way I can get rid of this is to restart InDesign. Once I do this it doesn't happen again until I restart my computer. Does anyone have advice on why this keeps happening?

I have searched and searched to find something on this with no luck.

Thank you,

Rick

Have you tried resetting your preferences?

To do so:

With InDesign closed Launch a Finder Window in column view and click on your home folder. With the Option Key pressed choose Library from the Finder Go Menu. Within the Library folder find the folder called Preferences and within it find the following two files and delete them: “Adobe InDesign” and “com.adobe.InDesign.plist”. When InDesign is next launched it will create new preference files and the program will be restored to its defaults.

The advantage of manually deleting preference files is that after you’ve reset up the program (make sure that no document window is open) to your liking, you can create copies of your personalized “mint” preference files (make sure that you quit the program before copying them—that finalizes your customization) and use them in the future to replace any corrupt versions you may need to delete.

Bill thanks for the quick reply,

Yes, I have reset prefs. I have even uninstalled InDesign then removed all files in the system for it then reinstalled InDesign. None of this has helped in fixing the problem.

A screen shot might help.

Sounds like you are referring to invisibles which can be toggled on and off from Type>Show/Hide Hidden Characters.

Do you mean this:

Rob, that's not it. I work mainly with invisible's on. I will need to take a screenshot of it after I restart my system the next time.

If you look at the screenshot you posted, all the spaces (small dots between words) are showing as return characters like one at the end of the paragraph.
