Split epub based on paragraph style export tags

I'm trying to split an epub using paragraph style export tags, but with some paragraph styles the splits are happening at each paragraph return resulting in one line per page. Attaching screenshot of epub in Apple Books where there is one line per page. I would like to have all these lines on one page.

What if you use a "soft return" instead of a "hard return" at the end of these types of lines? Instead of just pressing the Return key, hold down the Shift key while pressing the Return key.

If I'm reading this correctly, that's exactly what's supposed to happen. Create a new style for the last paragraph in a series based on that style. Typically this would only be done with one style for only chapters.
