Strikethrough Default

Community Beginner ,

Every time I open up my InDesign, start a new document, and make a text box, it defaults to making the text have a strikethrough. So every time, I have to turn the strickthrough off manually and it seems like its just a default now whenever I start a new document. I'm not hitting any shortcuts for it, I've unclicked it, then exited out of InDesign, quit the program, booted it back up, and it still is always set to strikethrough any text I want to insert.

Does anyone have any answers or help? My InDesign program is updated to the most recent version/software.

Every setting you make without any document open becomes the default for every new document. So, without any document open, check the fly-out menu of the Character panel if strikethrough is on, if do, deselect it. Next check you Paragraph style(s), check if it is off. Last check character styles, make sure [None] is selected.

You have a 'phantom default.' These are set when you have no object selected, and change a setting — font size, color, stroke, etc. (That's also how you deliberately set style parameters, if for example you want all objects to be magenta until further notice.)

With no document loaded, open [Basic Paragraph] for editing. Uncheck strikethrough. Save the change.

That should do it. You may have to repeat the fix in any existing docs; with no text selected, edit the relevant Styles, probably just

That should do it. You may have to repeat the fix in any existing docs; with no text selected, edit the relevant Styles, probably just [Basic Paragraph], and the persistent strike will go away.

(By the way, it's considered bad practice to use [Basic Paragraph] — the reasons why are complicated. But you should start your docs by creating a basic starting style — call it 'Body' or such — that is based on "[No Paragraph Style]." This bypasses a number of glitchy problems with style management.)
