Sudden changes in tools

I would love to have an answers on this problem with indesign CS5

When I draw a straight line with the line tool, I can't change the length afterwards anymore with the select tool. But when I give the line a color, I can change it. But when I take the color away I cannot change the length of the line anymore. This is new to me, and I think it has something to do with my setting.

Does anyone know what's going on? Thanks

This does not seem to be a correct workflow, please check on a new file if it still does not work please try resetting preferences for InDesign.
