Suddenly can't save a file in ID

I suddenly cannot save a file. I get an error message. "Cannot save under new name. The file is damaged. Error code: 1 (or 0)."

I *can* save it as an IDML file. I restart. No help.

What the heck has happened?

I googled and come up w a lot of ppl having this problem over the years. No real help or answer except save as IDML. Here's a link to one supposed fix:

InDesign CC (13.0.1.) - Often can't save as InDesign-Document (error code 0) – Adobe InDesign Feedback

It says to make sure there's a Recovery folder. The routing address is totally off per my Mac. I can't find any of the folders mentioned! it said it was a Mac problem. the advice was recent. but my mac didn't have hardly any such pathway or folders. “/Users//Library/Caches/Adobe InDesign/Version/13.0/en_US/InDesign Recovery/*”

For my Mac, Users goes to Admin/Guest/Shared. My hard-drive has Library > Caches, but only a few folders and no Adobe at all.

I have ID 18 CC. I'm not upgrading.

Anyway, it seems that the problem disappeared by itself! I just went to test Randy's suggestions and now every file will save anywhere!!! I haven't even restarted my laptop or ID!!! ...The past 2 days i could only save files in IDML. New files or old files. Now it's back to normal! Crazy!

Sometimes you just have to reconcile where those .idlk InDesign lock files get saved and opened/closed. That's a good part of what those tests were about.

Now, for maintenance, what I'd do is completely shut down out of InDesign. With the program completely shut down, any .idlk files you have in your system will be orphaned — that is, not associated with an existing InDesign document (.indd) or template (.indt) file.

Once you've shut down out of InDesign, search for any orphaned .idlk files on your system and kill them. If you're networked and use physical network and/or cloud stored files, have your network administrator do the same thing off-hours, when all systems on your network have InDesign shut down. If you are busy, or work in a busy InDesign shop, you'll find your storage locations are polluted with lots of orphaned .idlk files.

Glad things worked out for you.

P.S. — You don't have to do this, of course, but you can run both your InDesign CC2018 and the latest InDesign version. Just click on the downward-pointing triangle to the right of the Upgrade button, click the Manage command and specify that you don't want to delete existing versions on your computer. Jus' sayin' ...
